EVALUATION QUESTION 3

BY ALEX & BECCA

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Audience feedback was one of our most important aspects when it came to improving our music video. When we had finished filming and began to edit, we became aware that there were a lot of issues that needed to be addressed and changed in order to make it better. Our rough cut became a bit of a disaster in terms of as a team we didn't really communicate well when filming and Josh and Alex ended up getting in the way of each other filming. As well as this we kept filming the whole song the whole way through rather than parts of it at a time. This led to our lead singer and lead guitarist not really knowing the lyrics and ended up looking at the screen we had to read the lyrics. This was one of our criticisms below, that we did not have enough eye contact with the audience. Another criticism of our rough cut was that Aaron, our lead singer, did not actually know how to play the guitar and the audience could tell that. All these issues, as well as others, were pointed out by our target audience and so we took on board all of there feedback and constructed our final video. Once again we asked our target audience to review our final cut and to give us honest opinions, we asked this time people that study media also, as for our rough cut we asked non media students. In asking other members of our class who study media was helpful as they are more aware of the forms and conventions of music videos, as they too were creating a music video. Therefore the importance of feedback from other media students gave us the best opportunity to create a music video that fits all the forms and conventions which are important in creating a successful, professional and authentic music video. However, we did not just want to get feedback from our fellow pupils, we wanted to get there feedback when we had made our final cut, so they could pin point the aspects that maybe non media students couldn't. Therefore by asking non media students to view our rough cut they knew what a music video should look like and they pointed out the basic criticisms of it, this made our feedback more valid as we had feedback from a range of people who were all looking for different things. We learnt a lot from our target audience and as a team we felt that there feedback helped us make our final pieces so much better as these are the ones afterall that are likely to watch the video and so the changes had to be applied to the feedback given by this specific audience.

As you can see from the images below, we took our feedback very seriously and we had people watch our rough cut and comment on improvements we could make in order to make it better. We then had a group discussion once we looked over our written feedback and decided on a new date to film and made a set plan to get us organised for the next shooting, for example we asked Aaron to learn the lyrics and we we made set plans on who would film who so that no one got in the way of each other and we filmed in versus rather than the whole song the whole way through. Again below you can see how from our rough cut feedback we then used it to create our now final cut and once finished we then asked our target audience, who also happen to study media, to watch the music video and comment on what they liked/disliked, however it was more praise than criticism.

ROUGH CUT FEEDBACK

MAIN CHANGES WE MADE FROM AUDIENCE FEEDBACK:

Rough Cut

Final Cut

As you can see above is our rough cut and final cut. Before you even play the video you can see how we changed the lighting to illuminate the band more. The blue from the rough cut washes out the band and doesn't give them the significance they need.

Rough Cut main criticisms:

1) Lighting washes the band out, doesn't make them stand out.

2) Too slow in terms of editing, audience are quickly bored due to the lack of movement in shots and shots being too long and being too static.

3) Not enough close ups of the band members especially the lead singer.

4) The lead singer and lead guitarist do not know the lyrics.

5) Lead singer has no eye contact with the audience, which makes them feel disengaged.

6) Lead singer cannot play the guitar and makes him look awkward.

7) No name of the band anywhere so don't know who they are.

How we addressed these criticisms:

1) We changed and edited the lighting, making it more bright in order to light them up.

2&3) Filmed more than enough footage covering every area of the band which we did not do when we first filmed our rough vut. Alex and Josh each took either Aaron (our lead singer), Nathan (our lead guitarist) or Sam (our drummer) and filmed all around them so we had a lot of footage to choose from in order to create momement in the editing. This helped because then each person knew what they was doing which improved our communication and allowed Becca to look over each camera and see where we needed to film more. As the director she was also in charge of lighting, the music, the lyrics on the screen and watching over telling the band how to move what to do witht their body etc. We communicated so much better on our final cut as we made our set plan whfrom our rough cut fredback. Due to filming each person individually the range of footage meant we covered close ups of their face but also their instruments. We could also do this because we hand held the camera rather than using the tripod which we did in the  rugh ut when filming which led to the rough cut looking static. We also on our final cut used a GoPro which we left attached to the drum kit too film him so we could focus on our lead singer and lead guitarist.

4,5&6) The lead singer could not play the guitar and it was a big ask for us to ask him to be our lead singer, know the lyrics, have eye contact with the audience and have cameras in his face to look at. This is why after our feedback we asked both Aaron and Nathan to learn the lyrics in advance so when they got there they knew pretty much all of it which reduced the amount of time they needed to look at the screen we had for the lyrics, which meant they then could look at the camera more to make the audience feel more engaged due to the more eye contact. We also removed the guitar completely rather than getting him to try and learn how to play it and instead we gave him a tamborine so that he had something to pat rather than give him nothing and then his hands look awkward.

7) We added the pop up at the start of the song saying the band name and the song title. We also added the 4music logo in the corner to make it seem more realistic and as if it could be seen on a music channel.

FINAL CUT FEEDBACK

SUMMARY

From our audience feedback we learnt a lot and was vital in the production of our final music video. By getting a range of feedback, both from media students and not we had people that could spot specifics and also people to look out for things they expect in a music video as they are our target audeince and we had to impress them. From our rough cut, as you can see above we had main criticisms that I picked out when re-reading our rough cut feedback, which we changed for our final cut. Our target audience feedback has not only helped us make our final piece better, but also helped our group with our communication skills and time management. We communicated more as a team when it came to our final cut and we got our time management sorted out thanks to our communication getting better. Our final cut is 100x better than our rough cut in our teams opinion and by our final cut feedback we did a good job from all the positive feedback we received. Overall audience feedback was really important and was very helpful.
