LINKS BETWEEN ADVERT AND ALBUM COVER

BY BECCA SIMS

As you can see above, the magazine advert and album cover by Mumford & Sons have not made as stronger link than Jessie J's album and advert above. Instead of using the same image from the album for the magazine advert they have decided to completely change their image for the magazine advert. As you can see the magazine advert image is four seperate pictures of each band member holding their instruments, which portrays them more as individuals. However for their album cover they have used a group photo in a shop window, portraying them as a whole band.

The two pieces are once again different by the use of the text. For example, on the magazine advert due to the image taking up less of the space on the advert, it allows for more text to be written on the black backgound, however with the album cover there is much less space due to the image taking up the whole cover. The magazine advert includes the names of songs, quotes from music magazines and logos. Whereas the album cover only has the name of the band and the name of the album in quite a small font at the bottom of the cover. However there is a link, the font of the name of the band and name of the album is kept the same over both pieces which is important as there has to be some sort of link if the picture is not the same like it is here.

We realised that after studying and analysing magazine adverts and then actually comparing them to their album cover, they do not have to have the same image and we liked the use of this as we knew we did not want to use the image of our trees so we was glad to find out that you could actually not use the same image as long as there is some link between the two, which we will make sure by using the inside mage so that there is the same image from the album just not the front image and we would make sure to keep the same colours continued throughout.

The link between the magazine advert of Jessie J and her album cover is very strong. You can automatically see that they have used the identical image of Jessie J between both the album cover and the magazine advert. By using the same image on both but simply enlarging it on the advert, you can immediately tell that they are advertising the same product. By using the same colour scheme of black and gold throughout both also allows the audience to create a visual link between the two. The image is quite bold and stands out which makes it quite memorable. The gold of the writing bounces of these colours and makes the image stand out more. The only difference between the two is the advert has added songs that are included in the album, a star rating and a company logo. This gives it the features to make it a more authentic magazine advert. However I feel the two work really well together despite from these minor differences, they have created a strong link between both album and advert.
