Indie rock is a subgenre of alternative rock that started in the UK in the 80s. Indie was initially associated with record labels but the music indie labels produced adopted the term and became its own genre. Indie was interchangeable with alternative for a while in the 80s until bands like The Smiths began to shape the sound of the genre. In the 90s indie rock broke into the mainstream with bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Nirvana and began to develop its own subgenres such as Sadcore, Noise Pop, Emo, Space Rock and Math Rock.
Going forward Indie Rock became unanimous with bands that stayed true to their independent status. And in the 2000s, due to the growth of the internet, indie rock bands like Franz Ferdinand started gaining huge followings. Alongside the development of Indie Rock, Dance Punk was developing as a more heavily synthesized, electronic offshoot of indie.
“What You Know”, our chosen song, falls inbetween Dance Punk and Indie Rock which means it expresses both the classic rock elements of Indie with more upbeat features from Dance Puck which gives it a very contemporary feel.
