Typography Analysis

KERRANG! is a great title for the magazine as it connotates the sound of an electric guitar therefore it is appropriate for the genre of the magazine which is a rock magazine, as we normally represent guitars with the genre rock. The harsh black lines stricking through it could connotate strobe lights at concerts which again fits well with the music genre as KERRANG! shows many photos of concerts of the artists inside. The font extremely exhilerating, it is cracked and smashed at the edges, which could represent the rock sound the magazine is based around and the increase of a bass the 'booming sound'. Depending on the issue’s house style, the title KERRANG! changes colour in each magazine issue.

Mojo is quite an interesting name for a music magazine, it is very unique and interesting. Mojo's target audience are described as being passionate about their music and the title fits well with this as it connotates excitment and passion. The Mojo masthead is extremely large taking up a huge amount of space on the front page, this grabs people attention drawing them in making them read the magazine as it is so bold and bright. The masthead colour changes on each issue depending on the issues house style, so it is similar to KERRANG! however Mojo's main colours is black and white. The strapline across the title says "The Music Magazine". The strapline is written with an Italic font with a vintage unique style to it. It tells you it is a music magazine and suggests it is the best as it is written over the main title. the font style of the strapline is very neat, glamorous and tidy which connotes well with the layout of the whole magazine, as it is quite a neat and tidy magazine compared to some of KERRANG! magazine.

NME magazine is short for New Musical Express. This title suggests it is new, fresh and a bit like a train in a way and that if you read the magazine you will go on some sort of new exciting journey. However the font is rather dull as it is simply just white block capitals, compared to KERRANG! magazine where it has the cracks in its font and the black stricking lines through it. Despite the font being rather dull, it does catch readers attention as the white stands out on the page in contrast to the red background and it is a rather large sized font compared to my other two magazines i analysised. The font is formal suggesting the magazine is serious rather than something that talks about daily gossip, also the fact that it has the bold fonts and capital letters suggest it is the most important thing on the page and is the first thing the readers eyes are drawn to.
